We get alot of emails from our visitors asking about recommended books on CSS and (X)HTML. Here are a few which I own, have read, and highly recommend. They will cover everything from basic to advanced topics and are sometimes very useful in solving browser bugs and improving accessibility of sites which I have designed. You can read the full reviews at Amazon, but I have written some basics about each book below the pictures.

beginner's html/css

These are a few great books for those just learning HTML, CSS, or web design. In my opinion, it is important for beginners to understand standards and start developing with them, since bad habits are hard to break. These books will teach the fundamentals of proper markup and design techniques.

Head First HTML

Head First HTMLHead First HTML

This books teaches the basics of CSS and Table Based web design, (X)HTML tags, CSS properties, and how and when to apply them. I have lent this book to several friends who knew very little about HTML and they came out of it great with the basics and ready to learn more.

Web Standards Solutions

Web Standards SolutionsWeb Standards Solutions

Using Web standards is the fundamental key to a great design. Applying web standards can get very tricky for those just starting out and this book teaches what they are and covers some common applications and common mistakes. It also uses simple language and explains tags very well for people just starting out or those trying to learn the "right" way to design.

intermediate html/css

These books get a litte more advanced and go into things like browser bugs and how to fix them, intermediate CSS techniques, and some good examples of how to apply your knowledge.

CSS Mastery

Once people learn the basics and start designing, they always run into problems with things not behaving as they should (especially in Internet Explorer). This book goes into more detail on good CSS practices and styling as well as browser bugs and how to fix them. It's perfect for those who have the basics down and are ready to take it to the next level.

Eric Meyer on CSS

This is another great book which teaches CSS, semantic structure, and application through example. I highly recommend this book to people who know a little CSS and want to start learning the importance of applying it properly and writing solid, semantically correct coding.

advanced html/css

These books will pick up where the previous books left off. More techniques are discussed for CSS and accessibility to really make a beautiful, fully accessible web site.

CSS Zen Garden

The Zen of CSS DesignThe Zen of CSS Design

This is a great book on how to use standards for web design. This book is not for learning CSS, but is rather a book on how to apply it to make interesting and standards compliant design. Like their website, it serves as more of a book on inspiration and ideas rather than a step by step tutorial like the previously listed books.

Web Accessibilty

Web AccessibilityWeb Accessibility

In my opinion, web accessibility is one of the most overlooked and underused principles of web design. I have read that anywhere from 15% to 20% of internet users have some form of disability and this book covers just about every topic and how to apply it. When coupled with W3C compliant markup, accessibility can make a huge difference in how easily a site is used by all visitors (even those without disabilities). I strongly recommend this book for advanced developers, as well as for anyone trying to improve the user experience.
