Useful Tools

•  Basic MySpace Tutorials  •  Basic XuQa Tutorials  •  Advanced HTML/CSS Tutorials  •
•  Recommended Books  •  Useful Tools  •

We have listed some useful tools below to help you out with our tutorials, myspace and xuqa designs, and well as general web design. The first thing we recommend is to Get Firefox! It's free, has some great add-ons, is extremely secure (practically no pop-ups, viruses, or spyware), and much more standards compliant that Internet Explorer. The items listed below are all extensions of Firefox.

Add-ons

Firefox

Get Firefox, as it is needed for all of the extensions listed.

Colorzilla

Colorzilla is the perfect tool for quickly finding the color code of an element in your browser. I use it often to help match colors when I can't remember what hex code I used and don't want to search through all of my CSS to find it. It's also great to getting a color code of a color you might find that you would really like to use and matching colors to images.

Firebug

Firebug is very useful for finding and fixing errors in HTML and the DOM on the fly. It also allows you to see if there are any errors on the page at a glance, quickly telling you if there are any errors in coding.

IE Tab

IE Tab will make building pages that work in IE and Firefox easy. It allows you to quickly switch the rendering engine so you can see what something will look like in Internet Explorer. This is very useful when trying to fix bugs as well as for designing for both browsers as you go.

Measure It

The Measure It add-on will greatly facilitate getting coordinates or dimensions of elements in your browser. I use this tool commonly to place and size elements as well as think about where things will look good before creating a div.

View Source Chart

View Source Chart will allow you to view the the HTML structure of you document. This is extremely useful when troubleshooting CSS, finding the name of a container or a block element or finding open or improperly used tags in HTML.

Web Developer Toolbar

The Web Developer Toolbar will be highly useful for troubleshooting, for some of our tutorials, as well as for editing CSS and HTML of your documents without constantly having to resubmit changes. It also add lots of great functionality to Firefox and is probably my favorite and most used extension.
